A 1983 NY Times article devoted to the history of grape/vine leaves gives most credit to the Greeks for this culinary feat: “Greeks will tell you that the origin of stuffed vine leaves goes back to the time when Alexander the Great besieged Thebes. - Makloúba مقلوبةUpside Down Eggplant & Rice. This is a traditional dish from the Levant.
