- Alessandria “Gramolere” Barolo (Nebbiolo) ‘15 – Piedmont / $56.95The 2015 Barolo Gramolere (with fruit from Monforte d'Alba) opens to a medium-dark ruby color. When you put the wine to your lips, you immediately feel the power, structure and inner fiber of Nebbiolo as interpreted in this two-hectare parcel with its 30-year-old vines. In fact, this wine is defined by that immediate firmness. The aromas, however, are softer and more yielding with forest fruit, wild berry, crushed slate and blue flower. Blueberry, tangy sour cherry and bittersweet chocolate on the palate. Deep purple in color, medium tannins, yet bold and full-bodied, and drier than most Zins.
- Ridge “Geyserville” (Zin/Carignane/Petite Sirah/Mataro) ’17 – Sonoma, California (RP * 95) / $41.95The 2017 Geyserville is a blend of 68% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah and 2% Alicante Bouschet, aged 14 months in American oak, 16% new. Medium ruby, it opens with lilac, chocolate box and stone fruit hints with warm blackcurrants, red and black cherries, cranberries, cedar, tobacco leaf and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, it opens slowly in the mouth to pure fruits supported by fine, chalky tannins and integrated freshness on the very long finish. This is wound tight but has loads of potential and will require at least another few years in bottle.

- Les Volets Malbec ‘18 – Haute Valle de l’Aude, France / $9.95Vibrant ruby hues gleam out of the glass. The first notes on the nose are of crushed blueberries which then develop on to the reveal an intriguing bitter-sweet character of crème de cassis with a touch of underlying parma violets. Fine red-fruits fill the mouth, along with raspberries and a touch of dark chocolate truffle.
- Llama Old Vine Malbec ‘17 – Mendoza, Argentina (JS * 91) / $12.95Modern wine with attractive dark cherry-red color with violet hues. The nose shows great intensity. Fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries and plums stand out against a background of fine toast hints from ageing in top-quality oak. Warm, rounded and well-structured on the palate, with an explosion of fruit flavors underscored by light oaky notes. Pleasant, persistent aftertaste.
- Alias Merlot '17 - California / $12.95Deep garnet in color, this decadent merlot opens with notes of rasberry, violet, and pepper on the nose. Layered underneath are rich notes of earth and spice with a hint of mulberry. The berry notes continue onto the palate, where they are met with well-balance flavors of smoke and cedar. Enjoy this wine with your favorite hard cheese, or on its own.

- “Illusion” by Peirano (Old Vine Zin/Merlot/Petite Sirah/Cabernet) ‘17 – Lodi, California / $13.95The wine exhibits a rich deep burgundy hue with a perfect clarity. The aromas are a compendium of opulent plums, blackberries, black raspberries and white pepper. The palate explodes with rich mouth filling blackberries, juicy red cherries, plums, black raspberries and boysenberries. The long, seductive finish is filled with hints of toast and cola with firm, round, yet supple mouth filling tannins.
- Bastide Miraflors (Syrah/Grenache) ‘17 – Languedoc-Roussillon, France / $14.95This wine is almost too good to be true. A blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache that was brought up in concrete tanks (Grenache) and demi-muids (Syrah), the 2015 Bastide Miraflors Vieilles Vignes reminded me of a mini Syrah from California’s Manfred Krankl (yes I just compared a $14 Syrah to Sine Qua Non). It’s a ripe, sexy, heady beauty that exhibits a deep, purple color as well as killer notes of smoked meats, chocolate, blackberry and black raspberries. Deep, unctuous, open knit and layered, it continues to change in the glass, has a seamless and silky profile, and not a hard edge to be found. It’s a sensational value that needs to be tasted to be believed.
- Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone (Grenache/Syrah) ‘18 – Rhone Valley, France (JS*91) / $15.95This is pure syrah from both sides of the southern Rhône and has very rich dark cherries and sweet ripeness to the palate. Good depth and detail here. Juicy and long. Quite plush, too.
- Volver Tempranillo ‘16 – La Mancha, Spain / $15.95This plush red offers bold flavors of blackberry, currant, cocoa and espresso, with well-integrated tannins and sweet-tart acidity. Generous, fruity and fresh, in the modern style. Drink now through 2026.
- Omen Red Blend (Zinfandel/Barbera/Syrah/Petite Sirah) ‘17 – Sierra Foothills, California (WE * 90) / $18.95For those who like a hint of sweetness and a ton of dark jammy fruit flavors, this wine is a no-brainer. A blend of 50% Zinfandel plus Barbera, Syrah and Petite Sirah, it smells and tastes chocolaty, berry-like and superripe, and has a velvety texture that soothes the palate.
- Stolpman Para Maria Red (Syrah/Petite Verdot) ‘17 – Santa Barbara County, California (V * 95) / $21.95The 2017 Syrah Para Maria is another attractive wine from Stolpman. Here, too, the fruit is bright, precise and articulate, which is to say quite a departure from the style of the 2016. Generous and pliant on the palate, with no hard edges and striking aromatics, the 2017 is shaping up to be a real beauty. The 2017 is a blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Petite Verdot (all purchased fruit) done with about 40% carbonic maceration. Don't miss it.
- Chateau La Croix (Merlot/Cab Franc) ‘18 – Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux - France / $21.95Deep purple color – almost black. The elegant bouquet of ripe fruit is enhanced with toasted barrel notes. The tannic structure has flesh, fruit, and a lot of aromatic persistence. A promising wine that will go perfectly with red meats, sauces, and cheeses.
- Renacer “Milamore” (Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cab Franc/Bonarda) ‘15 – Mendoza, Argentina (JS*92) / $25.95Aromas of dried strawberries, blueberries and plums. Hints of licorice, too. Full body, round and soft tannins and a powerful, fresh finish. A blend of 45% malbec, 40% cabernet sauvignon, 10% bonarda and 5% cabernet franc.
- Pesquié “Quintessance” (Syrah/Grenache) ‘17 – Ventoux – Rhone Valley, France (RP * 94) / $27.95A blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache, the Ventoux Quintessence offers a complex bouquet of Herbes de Provence, ripe cherries, ground pepper, and orange zest. It's medium-bodied, silky and sexy on the palate, with fine tannin, terrific fruit, and a great, great finish. Drink it any time over the coming decade.

- Caymus-Suisun “Grand Durif” (Petite Sirah) ‘17 – Suisun Valley, California / $55.95Suisun (su-soon) Valley, which lies to the Southeast of Caymus, is only a 40-minute drive and reminds the Wagner family of Napa Valley 40 years ago. With its warm days and cool nights, the region is known for delicious stone fruits and walnuts – increasingly, it is also gaining recognition for its wine. Durif is synonymous with Petite Sirah, the widely grown grape in the region – they added “Grand” to the name of the Suisun-grown Durif because it has a grand style. With lush textural tannins, this wine is rich, supple and totally enjoyable.
- Catena Zapata “Argentino” Malbec ‘17 – Mendoza, Argentina (JS * 97) (RP * 95) / $108.95Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas with licorice, too. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, layered and deep. Deep garnet-purple colored, it soars from the glass with notions of crème de cassis, blueberry pie and plum preserves, giving way to a a wave of clove oil, chocolate box, exotic spices and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, rich and plush in the mouth, it has loads of spice-spiked black fruit layers, lifted by just enough freshness, going long and mineral-laced on the finish.
